DIY Felt Leaves Placemat // Pattern and Video

Wake up the sunshine in your life with these easy felt leaf placemats that you can make in a rainbow of colors. Perhaps try a sunny yellow reminding you of fields of sunflowers for breakfast cheer,  a sky blue or green for outdoor lunches under the trees, or warm oranges and reds for cosy indoor autumn dinners. Or try a rainbow of colours for Easter cheer. They can be used as table décor, as placemats, under a pot-plant to protect wooden surfaces or on bedside tables. Adjust the pattern to make them larger or smaller to accommodate the size of your dinner plate.

Supplies and tools

• Felt in colors of your choice – 8 pieces each 18 x 8cm (7 inches x 3 1/4 inches) cut into a leaf shape using our pattern instructions
• matching thread
• scissors (or rotary cutter and a cutting mat)
• ruler or measuring tape
• iron and ironing board
• sewing clips or pins

Felt Leaves Placemat VIDEO TUTORIAL

INSTRUCTIONS:

STEP 1:

Download, print and trim the excess paper from the felt leaves placemat pattern.

Alternatively you can make your own pattern as described below:

On a sheet of A4 card start creating your pattern. With the card placed portrait style on your worktop draw a line roughly in the middle 7 inches (18 cm) long. Next measure 3 ¼ inches (8 cm) down from the top of the line and make a mark, then from that mark measure 1 ½ inches (4 cm) on either side of vertical line and mark the points.

STEP 2:

Use a pencil to join the top point curving out to the left then in again to the bottom point. Do the same on the opposite side – the drawing should be freehand to get a more natural looking leaf shape. Once you are happy with the curves, define the line with a pencil or marker pen and cut out the leaf pattern.

STEP 3:

Choose the felt colors for your placemats and cut out the 8 leaf shapes using a rotary cutter on a self-healing cutting board – you can do up to four layers of leaves at once. The rotary cutter will give you a cleaner shape than using scissors. If using scissors cut the leave shapes out individually, ensuring the edges are as neat as you can make them. You will need to cut 8 leaves.

STEP 4:

Place the leaves in a circle with the base points just touching and each leaf slightly overlapping the leaf beside it. Adjust until you are happy with the placement, then pin the overlapping portions in place.

STEP 5:

You will be stitching the leaves together using a daisy petal formation on your machine, starting at the central point, going up one side of the overlapping leaf, turning at the top, then coming down the other side of the overlap,back to the base, across to the opposite side and up the next leaf until you have worked your way around the felt leaf placemat.

Once you have done one placemat you can either make it a feature on a table for a special dish or make a set of matching placemats.

Care Tips:

Modern felt can be washed, with hand washing the recommended method.

• Gently submerge the felt item in cool water to which a little mild detergent has been added.
• Agitate the water with your hands to get the dirt out of the felt rather than rubbing the felt.
• Rinse in cool water to get rid of the soap, then dry flat.

Throwing the placemats in a long wash cycle can cause shrinkage or damage. If you must machine wash put on a short delicate cycle with cool water and remove promptly from the machine to air dry. Don’t risk putting them in an a tumble drier as the felt can distort and shrink.
