French pie carrier VIDEO TUTORIAL

INSTRUCTIONS:

STEP 1: Cut the fabrics

  • Body of carrier: 2 x cotton fabric rectangles of 31 ½ x 15 ¾ inches (80 x 40 cm) of different colors/prints
  • Handles: 4 cotton rectangles of 19 ¾ x 2 inches (50 x 5 cm) – 2 in the main color and 2 in the contrast colors

PRO TIP: We have provided the dimensions for a rectangular pie carrier but if you are using a square pie dish or a round one, then reduce the length of the rectangle to something more suited to the size of your dish – it won’t affect any of the step-by-step instructions provided.

STEP 2:

Starting with the handles, take the 4 cotton rectangles of 50 x 5cm and lay two of a the same fabric print wrong side down on your worktop near each other. Over them place the two rectangles in the contrasting color, right sides facing each other. Pin in place.

STEP 3:

Starting in the middle of one of the lengths you have pinned together, stitch right around the edge with a 1 cm seam allowance, making sure to stop 2 ½ inches from where your started. This gap is to turn the handles the right way out later. To get neat square corners take your needle right to the point where you want to turn, life the presser foot, swing the fabric 90 degrees then depress the presser foot and carry on. Repeat with the other handle.

STEP 4:

Trim off the corners to reduce bulk then press open the seams for a better

finish. Pull the fabric gently through the gap to get it the right way out and smooth out the fabric. Use a turning tool, chopstick or knitting needle to help you get the corners turned out neatly.

STEP 5:

Press again, turning in the raw edges of the gap in line with the rest of the fabric and stitch all around 1/8 inch (3mm) from the edge.

STEP 6:

Take one rectangle for the pie carrier body, lay on your worktop, and make marks at  4 1/3 inches (11 cm) and 11 ½ inches (29 cm) on each of the long edges on the right side of the fabric.

STEP 7:

Place the middle of the end of one of the handles on the 4 1/3 inch (11 cm) mark and the other on the 11 ½ inches (29 cm) mark with the handle facing in towards the fabric and lining up the end with the raw edge. Make sure the handle is not twisted and that the handle color matches the fabric rectangle.    Secure with a pin. Do exactly the same with the other handle on the other long edge.

STEP 8:

Place the second rectangle over the first, wrong side up and line up the edges. Pin or clip in place. Make sure the handles are not going to get caught in the seams when you sew them –secure them with a pin from the outside so they don’t move as you stitch.

STEP 9:

Starting in the middle on one of the short sides backtack then stitch all the way around, across the area where the handles are pinned, back stitching at the handles so they are firmly attached. You should be stitching around 1/3 of an inch (1cm) from the edge. When you get to  2 ¾ inches (7 cm) from where you started, stop and backtack. This creates the gap through which you will turn the reversible pie cover. Remove all pins.

STEP 10:

Clip off the corners at an angle – taking care not to get too close to the stitch line – this reduces bulk make on the corners when turning. To ensure a great finish press open the seams on the pie cover then pull the fabric gently through the gap.

STEP 11:

Once turned press out the corners gently with a turning tool or chopstick to get them flat. Give the pie holder a press so the seams are lying flat, making sure the raw edges at the gap are turned in so they are in line with the seam.

STEP 12:

Top stitch along the sides that have the handles attached, 1/8 of an inch (3mm) from the edge.

STEP 13:

Fold the bag in half on the long sides so the handles meet up, make a mark to indicate the middle on each of the short sides.

STEP 14:

Fold both the sides to meet the mark and pin in place.

STEP 14:

Stitch along the one short edge 1/8 of an inch (3mm) from the edge, back tacking at the start and finish. Repeat with the other short edge. If you want to use bias binding in a matching color to hide the stitching this is totally up to you.

Your reversible pie carrier is ready to use; just one carrier but two totally different looks when you turn it inside out. These make a great gift especially if you include a home-baked pie in the carrier too. Just make sure it is covered to avoid staining your pie carrier. Love this idea?
