DIY Sunhat VIDEO TUTORIAL
INSTRUCTIONS:
STEP 1:
Take the pattern for the BRIM and lay it on the fold of your material where the pattern is marked FOLD. You can either use a self-healing cutting mat and rotary cutter to cut out the pattern after using some weights to keep the pattern in place. The alternative is to pin the pattern to the fabric and cut it out using scissors. Repeat with the lining fabric.
STEP 2:
After cutting out the BRIM, take the left over bit of fabric which will be almost circular and fold and place the section marked TOP of the hat on it, with the part of the pattern marked FOLD on the fold and cut out. Repeat with the lining fabric.
STEP 3:
Take the two pattern pieces for the crown – front and back, and place with the portion marked FOLD on the fold of your fabric and cut out. Repeat with the lining fabric.
STEP 4:
Take the pattern piece for the BOW and with the right sides of the bow fabric together cut 2.
STEP 5:
Take your fabric and transfer the marks on each of the pattern pieces to the pieces of fabric, making the marks with a fabric marking pen on the wrong side of the fabric.
The top of the hat will have 4 marks dividing it into quarters, the brim will have three marks, and the crown pieces two marks indicating the center. There are small lines and triangles – transfer them accurately, as these are important later when joining the pieces together.
STEP 6:
Now is the time to fuse the interfacing to each of the outer fabric pattern pieces on the wrong side of the fabric – only if you are NOT using medium weight fabric. Lighter weight fabric will need the interfacing so the hat is not floppy.
STEP 7:
Place the outer crown pieces right side to right side, lining up the sides and clip in place. Stitch along the side seams with a ¾ inch (1 cm) seam allowance.
STEP 8:
Place the lining crown pieces right side to right side, line up the sides and clip or pin in place. Stitch along the side seams with a ¾ inch (1 cm) seam allowance.
STEP 9:
Take the outer and the lining pieces of the crown, open out the seams of each and press flat. Set aside.
STEP 10:
Place the lining and outer of the brim pieces right side to right side, and clip in place. Stitch around the OUTER edge of the brim only with a ¾ inch (1 cm) seam allowance.
STEP 11:
Clip around the outer edge, making small nicks to enable the brim to lie flat once turned. Take care not to get too close to the seam line.
STEP 12:
Turn the brim the right way out. Use a turning tool to press out the seam neatly, then give it a press.
STEP 13:
Top stitch around the outer edge of the brim 1/8 of an inch (3 mm) from the edge.
Next top stitch around the raw edge of the brim with a ¾ inch (1 cm) seam allowance.
STEP 14:
Working from the outer brim side and lining up your presser foot with the outer top stitching, stitch evenly spaced lines around the brim, until you reach the inner edge.
STEP 15:
Trim the inner raw edge of the brim, then make small nicks to enable the brim to lie flat when attached to the crown later.
STEP 16:
To stitch the bow, take each bow piece and fold in half along the length, right sides facing inwards. Stitch along the long side 3/8 of an inch (6 mm) from the edge, then across the angled piece. To get a neat turn when you get to the end of the long side, life the presser foot leaving the needle down in the fabric, swing the fabric, depress the presser foot and keep stitching. Remember to backtack at the start and finish. Repeat for the other half of the bow. If the fabric you are using a prone to fraying then pass a lighter along the seams to fuse the edges.
STEP 17:
Turn the bow pieces the right way out using a safety pin or a turning tool. Press flat.
STEP 18:
Starting with the lining, join the crown to the top of the hat, lining up the triangles and the lines and clipping the four quadrants in place first before easing the rest of the fabric in place and clipping. Repeat with the outer fabric for the crown and top of the hat.
STEP 19:
Stitch around the area where the top joins the crown on the lining ¾ of an inch, (1 cm) from the edge. Repeat with the outer fabric for top and crown. Backtack at the finish.
STEP 20:
Make small nicks in the seam where the crown joins the top to enable it to lie flat. Take care not to cut too close to the seam. Do this for the lining and the outer fabric.
STEP 21:
Turn the seam down towards the crown for the outer fabric and top stitch on the right side of the fabric 1/8 of an inch (3 mm) from the edge on the top edge of the crown to hold the seam fabric in place. Repeat with the lining fabric.
STEP 22:
On the lining fabric measure ½ and inch (1.3 cm) up from the base on the cut-out edge of the arch shape on the crown, and make a mark. Repeat on the other side of the arch shape.
STEP 23:
Above the mark, on the right side of the lining, place the raw edges of the bow pieces to line up with the raw edge of the fabric on each side of the arch. Ensure the seam sides of the bow pieces are towards the bottom of the crown. Clip the ends of the bow pieces in place. (It is not a step in the video, but if you want to you can do a stitch the ends of the bow pieces to the crown so you don’t risk them coming loose when you do the next step.)
STEP 24:
Over the crown and top of the lining place the outer fabric, right side inside to face the right side of the lining. Line up the marks around the arch shape in the back of the hat and clip in place, taking care to move the clips for the bow pieces to accommodate the outer fabric – unless you chose to stitch them down in Step 23 which would make them secure.
STEP 25:
Stitch around the arch shape 3/8 of an inch (6 mm) from the edge, back tacking at the start and finish. Make small nicks in the arch shape edges to enable the fabric to lie flat when turned.
STEP 26:
Open up the outer and lining and clip the brim to the outer, right sides facing each other, making sure the marks align.
STEP 27:
Stitch the brim to the outer using a 3/8 inch (6 mm) seam allowance.
STEP 28:
Fold the brim and the bow ends up and fit inside the lining, so you have the wrong sides on the outside, then match up the marks , triangle to triangle and line to line and clip in place.
STEP 29:
Sew around the edge using a 3/8 of an inch (6 mm) seam allowance and leaving a gap of 3 inches (8 cm) towards one side of the crown. Backtack at the start and end of the gap.
STEP 30:
Fold the edges of the gap in line with the seam, then pull the brim through the gap and use a turning tool to smooth out the seams.
STEP 31:
Tuck the raw edges of the gap in line with the seam and pin in place, then top stitch around the base of the crown including the arch shape where the ribbons are attached.
Make this versatile reversible sun hat for country walks or beach time, simply with appropriate choice of fabrics. It has a bow to adjust to head size, and if you have hair in a ponytail the gap at the back it will accommodate the pony and the ribbon will keep your hat in place. It’s the perfect sun hat for gardening too.
All that remains is to try the hat on and tie the ribbons into a bow and you’re ready for the summer. Please remember to give us a like if you enjoyed this tutorial. As a subscriber you will get all the latest projects delivered to your inbox, so you never miss out on a project again.
