How to make a Christmas Table runner
I like to use quilting cottons but you can use any suitable fabric. There are so many gorgeous fabrics in store or online that it is sometimes difficult to choose, but I prefer a stunning feature fabric for the front panel and one with a smaller design picking up one of the colors in the front feature panel for the backing. Generally, I prefer a darker color as it frames the front panel well, but you may want to choose a lighter color for the backing – just bear in mind that if you use the reverse of the table runner you still want it to complement your table décor.

INSTRUCTIONS:
STEP 1:
Cut your fabrics. You will need
- 1 x Front fabric 12 x 41 inches (30 x 104 cm)
- 1 x Backing fabric 18 x 41 inches (46 x 104 cm)
FINISHED SIZE:
The finished size of the table runner is 39.5″ by 14.5″ (100 x 37cm) with a 7″ (18cm) pointed ends
NOTE: If you want your table runner to hang over the table, please chech the FAQ below the tutorial for tips how to achieve that!
Make sure you measure and cut your rectangles of fabric accurately for ease of sewing and neat corners – this is where the quilting ruler comes in handy.
STEP 2:
Place the two pieces of fabric right side to right side. Line up the lower edges and clip into place.
Line up the top edges and clip in place. Don’t worry about the extra loop of backing fabric as it will form the border later – this is such a clever design.
STEP 3:
Stitch along the sides you have clipped or pinned together ¼ inch (6mm) from the edge.
Step 4:
Press the seams towards the backing fabric then turn the right way out, and lay out flat, measuring carefully to make sure that the borders are even on each side of the central panel. Press the fabric.
PRO TIP: to make sure the borders are even, fold the tube of fabric to match the seams you just made, finger press both folded ends. Repeat for the other side of the tube
Now match the markings you made
Step 5:
Turn in the raw edges at the ends of the table runner in by ¼ inch (6mm) and press in place.
Step 6:
Fold the table runner on the short side in half, with the front narrow panel to the outside. Clip in place, making sure the edges are neatly lined up, then stitch on the right side 1/8 an inch (3mm) from the edge, back tacking at the start and finish.
Repeat with the other end of the table runner.
Step 7:
Turn out the triangular shape at the end of the runner using chopsticks or a turning tool to make it neat and flat. It’s so easy to reach for your scissors to do this, but you do risk poking a hole in the fabric if not careful, so I advise you avoid using scissors.
Step 8:
You can either fold the triangular shape at each end upward to cover part of the front panel, showing more of the backing fabric, or turn it back to show more of the front panel. Adjust so the triangle is neat and symmetrical. Whichever look you choose, press the triangular ends of the table runner so it lies flat on your festive table.
OPTIONAL: If you have a favorite look and don’t want reversible, just stitch the ends down. I explain how in the FAQ below
And there you have it, a truly quick and easily reversed table runner you will be proud to put on any table this festive season. By adjusting the color and patterns the reversible table runner can be to fit any size table for a special event. Besides Christmas, it could be for a special birthday, a graduation, Valentine’s, Easter, Halloween or even for a wedding.

FAQs and tips:
Q: Can I stitch the ends down?
A: If you prefer you can stitch a line in a matching thread on the straight side of the triangle at the ends if it is facing forward, covering a little of the front panel. This line of stitching at either end will keep your runner firmly in place, but it will no longer be reversible. If you want more of the front panel showing and choose to turn the triangle shape to the back then I suggest running a slip stitch along the straight edge of the triangle at the back so you do not have any stitching showing on the right side.
Q: How to make this table runner hang over the table?
A: How much should a table runner hang over the edge? Since the pointed ends are meant to overhang and these are 7″ (18cm) your overhang should be 8″ (20cm). We have 2 pointed ends, so you will need to add 2 x 8″ = 16″ (or 2 x 20cm= 40cm) to your table length.
- Length of fabric = your table length + 16″ (40cm)
- Width of the fabric remains the same – 12″ (30cm) for the front fabric and 18″ (46cm) for the backing fabric.
In most cases this would mean that you need to cut along the length of your fabric, not the width.
