Door Stopper VIDEO TUTORIAL
MATERIALS:
- Fabric: 38 x 25cm (15 x 10″) canvas or home decor fabric
- Webbing: 2.5cm x 15cm (1 x 6″)
- Polyfill
- Weighted filler: I suggest using glass beads or poly pellets but if you don’t have any you can use rice, beans, wheat grains, or gravel
- use either glass pellets or poly pellets if you want to be able to throw the door stopper in the wash
- if you use rice, beans, wheat grains, or gravel you will need to only spot clean the door stopper
INSTRUCTIONS:
STEP 1:
Download and print the pattern at 100% (no scaling) on A4 or US letter paper. Tape the two pieces of paper together and trim the excess.
The seam allowance used in the pattern is 6mm (1/4″) unless stated otherwise.
STEP 2:
Cut 2 pieces of home decor fabric according to the pattern.
STEP 3:
Fold the top down 6mm (1/4″) towards the wrong side on both pieces of fabric.
STEP 4:
Place the two pieces of fabric together with the folded ends on top. Clip or pin together. Sew the sides and the bottom using 6mm (1/4″) seam allowance. Make sure to backstitch at the beginning and the end of each seam.
STEP 5:
Box the corners:
Reach into a corner and open it. Bring the side and bottom seams together, matching the seams. Pin together. Repeat for the other corner
STEP 6:
Stitch the corners, backstitching at the beginning and the end
STEP 7:
Turn the door stop right side out.
STEP 8:
Align the folded top edges with the seams on each side.
STEP 9:
Use a ruler to find the middle of the top and mark it.
STEP 10:
Fill with your chosen filler (in my case this is rice).
STEP 11:
Fill the rest of the doorstop with polyfill. Do not overstuff it. You just need it to keep the shape.
STEP 12:
Take your piece of webbing and melt the edges with a lighter to prevent fraying.
TIP: if you don’t have webbing, you can make the handle using a piece of thin rope or a piece of the same fabric folded bias style and sewn shut.
STEP 13:
To make the handle fold the webbing in half and insert in in the middle of the top, making sure it is centered. Push the raw edges about 1 -1.5cm (3/8″ – 1/2″) in. Pin or clip in place
STEP 14:
Push the polyfill away from the seam and pin about 1cm (3/8″) away from the seam. This will make the closing seam easier to sew.
STEP 15:
Change your standard sewing foot for a zipper foot and sew straight across as close to the edge as possible. Take your time to sew this as straight as possible.
