INSTRUCTIONS:
STEP 1:
Lay your 7 inch (18 cm) zippers, right side up, in a row with all the zipper pulls facing the right. Test out combinations of colors by rearranging to see which ones work well.
You can make the zipper pouch deeper to accommodate larger items by adding more zippers, the one in the video used 6 zippers. For the sake of uniformity ensure the zipper teeth are all plastic and have the same style of zipper pull combining different styles of zippers pulls won’t look as good.
If you have slightly longer zippers you can always cut them down to size.
STEP 2:
Join the zippers together by stitching the second zipper slightly over the one above it, stitch as close to the edge of the tape as possible. Continue in this way until you have all six zippers attached. Remember to backtack at the start and end of each row of stitching.
STEP 3:
Cut the cotton fabric for the backing to suit your assembly of zippers. In my case the fabric to cover the 6 zippers was 8 ¾ x 6 inches (22 x 15 cm).
STEP 4:
Slide each zipper open one third to half way, then lay the backing fabric right side up on your worktop. Over it place the assembly of zippers, wrong side up. We open all the zippers so that the zipper pulls do not get in the way when sewing.
STEP 5:
Pin the ends of the zippers to the backing fabric, then carefully pin the open ends to the fabric, taking care with the placement so they lie flat and even (remember the zippers are still a third to halfway open).
STEP 6:
Stitch right around the edge of the assembly, leaving no gaps as you will be pulling the item the right way out through one of the zippers. Your stitch line will be ¼ of an inch (6 mm) from the edge on the long sides of the zipper tape. On the ends, the seam allowance will vary as you want to stitch just inside the zipper stop at the end so you don’t see the metal or plastic stopper. On the end where the zipper pull is situated you want to stitch and backtack over each end for strength as this is the area that will take the strain of opening and closing the zipper. Stitch just inside those zipper stops at the top of the zipper.
STEP 7:
Trim away the extra fabric and zipper tape on the ends so the seam allowance is the same as the side – ¼ of an inch (6 mm).
Snip off the corners to reduce bulk when turned the right way out, taking care not to snip too close to the stitch line.
Optional: For a neater inner finish, you can serge (overlock) the seam allowance or zigzag, or use pinking shears for the zigzag edge to prevent fraying of the cotton fabric.
STEP 8:
Turn the pouch the right way out by pulling the fabric gently through one of the open zippers.
STEP 9:
Test your zippers and have fun deciding what to put inside the pouch. It makes for a practical gift that is also a conversation piece. Depending what you have inside it may be more convenient to open from the top, or lay it flat and open from the middle zipper.
