Felt Leaf Coaster VIDEO TUTORIAL

INSTRUCTIONS:

To make this DIY felt leaf coaster you will need:

– 1 light green pieece of felt 14 x 13cm (5.5 x 5″) for the top

– 1 dark green pieece of felt 14 x 13cm (5.5 x 5″) for the back

Finished coaster measures approximately 12.5 x 11.5 cm (5 x 4.5″)

STEP 1:

Download and trim the Monstera leaf pattern.

STEP 2:

Place the leaf pattern on top of the light green felt and transfer the pattern to the felt piece. Fold the leaf pattern along the center and mark along the fold – this will be the main vein of the leaf. Mark the indentations in the leaf and the small hole on the pattern with a fabric marking pen. Set aside.

Using the same leaf pattern trace around the edge ONLY of the pattern onto the darker piece of green felt with a fabric marking pen.(you will have NO holes or cuts, just a single whole heart-shaped piece).

STEP 3:

Cut out one dark piece of felt according to the outer shape.

Cut out one light green piece of felt according to the outer shape and cut out the holes in the leaves. To cut the small elliptical shape on the lighter felt simply fold the felt in half then cut a slit down the center of the ellipse, enabling you to insert your scissors and cut out the shape easily, for the indentations on the leaf use a small pair of scissors to enable you to cut accurately.

PRO TIP: If you are making a set of coasters you can cut out all your felt pieces to speed up the process.

STEP 4:

Place the lighter shade of green with the shapes cut out over the darker piece of green backing felt and line up the edges then clip in place.

STEP 5:

Stitch around the edge of the coaster 1/8 of an inch (3mm) from the edge all the way around the two layers of felt with a straight stitch.

STEP 6:

Set your machine to medium zig zag stitch, stitch along the midrib (main vain in the center of the leaf) of the monstera leaf from the top to the bottom. If your machine does not do zigzag stitch it’s fine if you just use a straight stitch.

And that is it – your first monstera leaf coaster is done. Use it for your coffee or tea in the morning to cheer you up and make you think of tropical gardens in the depth of winter. Or go ahead and make a set of 6 or more to use when you have guests over for a dinner party. Make them as gifts for friends who like to entertain, for your colleagues at work, your parents, and whoever you think would be cheered up with the gift of a monstera leaf coaster. Of course, you do not have to make these in green – they can be made in two shades of pink or orange or blue, or even black combined with white or grey for a sophisticated look – I would just put the white or light grey underneath the black layer to avoid the white getting coffee or wine stains on it.
