HEART PILLOW PATTERN + INSTRUCTIONS:

STEP 1: Prepare the heart pillow pattern

Download and print the heart pillow pattern at 100% (no scale) if you want to make a large heart pillow. Print the sewing pattern at 60% for the small heart pillow (red one pictured below). Trim the excess paper from the sewing pattern and tape the two parts of the template together.

STEP 2: Cut the fabrics

Fold the fleece fabric in half and place the heart template pattern on the fold. Pin and cut out the fabric according to the template. The seam allowance is 1/2 inch and is already included. Repeat for the second fabric piece, so that you’ll end up with two identical heart pieces.

TIP: As always, I recommend pre-washing the fabrics if you are going to wash them in the long run. This ensures that they won’t shrink and your DIY heart pillows will always look at their best!

STEP 3: OPTIONAL: Add decoration on top

This step is completely optional, so feel free to skip it if you want to make the standard minimalistic pillow.

Cut out the heart outlines

Use this free heart garland pattern and cut out the middle sized heart outlines. The template is meant to be cut on fold, so fold your decorative fabric in half and pin the template on top. Cut out 2 identical heart outlines.

Arrange the heart elements

Place the hearts in the center of the heart pillow top, with wrong side of hearts facing the right side of the pillow top. Arrange them to your liking. If you want to replicate my design, just place the hearts on top of each other as shown. Carefully lift the top heart and make a cut throw the heart below it so that you can make the twist design. Pin everything in place so that it won’t shuffle while you are sewing.

arrange the heart decoration

Using straight stitch, sew along the whole design.

You can either make two parallel lines at each side of the outline or take the lazy route like me and make a single line at the center of the fabric. Both will work, and although parallel lines would definitely look really cool if done right, Sherpa fabric with another fabric on top is a difficult combo to tackle. If you are a beginner, save yourself some seam ripping and sew a single line in the middle.

STEP 4: Layer and pin fabrics

Take the back piece and place it over the pillow top, right sides facing. Pin generously around the heart to keep the Sherpa fleece from moving. Leave a 3 inch gap on one of the straight sides of the pillow.

STEP 5: Stitch around

Stitch around the heart pillow using a 1/2inch seam allowance.

Go slow and use a walking foot if you have one, as Sherpa fleece is thick and this will definitely help you sew it a lot easier. Stop and pivot at corners and carefully sew the curves of the heart.

STEP 6: Trim and clip the excess

Taper the seam allowances on the sides toward the point of the bottom. Clip small triangle notches along the curves, about ½ inch apart to allow the heart pillow to lay flat and look better.

STEP 7: Turn around

Turn the whole heart pillow inside out through the gap you left. Use your fingers to push out the seams as much as possible

STEP 8: Stuff well

Fill your pillow with the poly-stuff to your desired firmness. Pillows take a lot of stuffing, so don’t be baffled if it’s your first (or second) time using poly-fill.

STEP 9: Pin

Fold the raw edges of the gap 1/2inch to the inside and pin to keep them in place.

STEP 10: Stitch the gap

Take a hand-sewing needle and matching thread and sew the gap using either ladder (invisible) stitch or whip stitch. I’m using red thread on the white pillow so you can clearly see where I am sewing, but using matching thread makes this totally invisible.

Voila! Your DIY heart pillow is ready. Cute as a button. These heart pillows look really cool together in a group of two or three!
